The Bronx Culture Trolley is breathing new life into the South Bronx. Ellen Pollan, Director of the South Bronx Cultural Corridor for the Bronx Council on the Arts says, "It's a metaphor for how the arts can build a community."
On the first Wednesday of every month, except January, Pollan rings the bell signaling the trolley's departure, and people climb aboard for an evening of arts and entertainment. The trolley parks at the Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College (450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street), and embarks on a tour of numerous destinations. "The trolley is a tool that allows people to feel welcome, and make art in the neighborhood accessible to everyone," says Pollan. While the itinerary varies from month to month...
notable stops include the Haven Arts Gallery (50 Bruckner Blvd., Bldg. A), J. Maxson's Bar & Grill (2576 Third Avenue at 139th Street ) and the Bronx Museum of the Arts (1040 Grand Concourse), which is essentially the MoMA of the Bronx. The ever-changing chain of exhibits reflects the thriving arts scene in the Bronx, which has long been overshadowed by trendier areas of New York City. Pollan believes the trolley is "raising the profile of the South Bronx, and making it an arts destination for people."
The Bronx Culture Trolley departs from the Longwood Art Gallery at Hostos Community College (450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street), and makes a ?cultural loop? around the South Bronx. For more information, go to www.bronxarts.org/culture_trolley.asp.
